Moncton’s Norma Melanson has been on the frontline of health care for 52 years as a nurse and nursing teacher.

She’s seen it all, but it was recent heart issues that brought her to Saint John to be a “first” for the New Brunswick Heart Centre and this province.

“I was extremely weak,” said Norma. “I was leaving this world, I think.”

Dr. Satish Toal got to work. He gave Norma a new pacemaker. And not like previous ones that brought her so much trouble.

“It takes away the need for the wires, takes away the need for the pockets,” said Dr. Toal. “So for people who you cannot access their heart, through the veins on the top, you can just go ahead and put this pacemaker right into the heart.”

This “wireless” pacemaker would be the first of its kind implanted at the New Brunswick Heart Centre.

“I think it’s a reflection of teamwork,” says Dr. Toal. “It’s a reflection of the trust that our patients have, and administrators have in us.”

That teamwork was evident to Norma.

“I’ve never seen a team collaborate so closely, and the end result is that they want to promote health and provide quality care to the patient.”

The New Brunswick Heart Centre is the primary referral centre for cardiac care in New Brunswick and PEI.

Your support helps the team continue to perform breakthrough procedures and medical firsts.

“Your patients believe in you.”

Five days before Christmas 2013, Melvina Glidden’s doctor called her to tell her there was something suspicious on her mammogram. By February 2014, she started chemotherapy for breast cancer.

“When you get the news, there really are no words in the English language to describe how you feel,” said Melvina. “I was weepy. I was sad. I was scared. But then I just thought, ‘I am going to fight this.’ Dr. Shakerinia, my Surgeon, and Dr. Harb, my Oncologist, and everyone at The Moncton Hospital made me feel like the most important person on that journey. Now I am cancer free.“

“Your patients believe in you,” said Dr. Mohammed Harb. “And they believe in your treatment. Without fundraising, I wouldn’t have important equipment to bring the best treatment to those who need it in New Brunswick.”

“I am very grateful of the work that the CHU Dumont Foundation does.”

Ever since I’ve had access to the equipment required to do my hemodialysis treatments at home, my life has changed dramatically. I have more energy, more freedom, and it affords me the flexibility not only for work, but to spend a lot more time with my family. Also, I get to travel a lot more. My workload is very heavy as a Dean and scientific researcher, and with this new arrangement, I now have more time to do the things that matter to me. It’s an incredible feeling!

I am very grateful of the work that the CHU Dumont Foundation does, not only in terms of fundraising but also the promotion of the importance of these types of gifts.
