Mario Scichilone suffered with a stuffed up nose and sinus pressure every day for 10 years.

“No medication helped. I pretty much gave up hope for a cure. But then I was referred to Dr. Christopher Chin, Ear Nose and Throat specialist. That day, everything changed.”

Mario’s nose was 95-98% blocked with polyps – one of the worst cases of Chronic Rhinosinusitis Dr. Chin had seen. It affects 10% of the population and the Saint John Regional Hospital is currently the main referral centre for complex sinus surgery cases in New Brunswick.

“Dr. Chin changed my life. I could breathe again! And I could taste and smell more, too.”

“I get my lottery tickets every year because I want to give back. My entire family has benefited from the hospital and the level of service we received is second to none.”

Your support helps to purchase specialty medical equipment like Dr. Chin used in Mario’s surgery, plus proceeds help keep our doctors and clinical staff on the cutting edge of advances in medicine and empowers mental health programs and research across the province, meaning medical staff can focus on what matters most: our patients.

Dr. Satish Toal (left) and Jean Poirier (right)

Cardiac issues hit Jean Poirier close to home.

“I’m 61 years old,” he said. “And I’m the longest surviving male in my family.”

In 1999, three months after his brother died from heart failure, Jean collapsed. Thankfully he got to the hospital in time. Surgeons in Halifax implanted an internal defibrillator in Jean’s chest. If his heart stops the machine delivers a lifesaving shock to get it going again.

Internal defibrillators have an 8-10 year lifespan. Jean had his first implant replaced in Halifax.

“That was a four-hour inpatient operation,” he said.

Dr. Satish Toal, Electrophysiologist, performed Jean’s second implant replacement at the NB Heart Centre in Saint John.

“Dr. Toal came in and 20 minutes later tapped me on the toes and said, ‘You can go home now.’ I was awake the whole time. They really refined the process.”

Now, once a year, Jean travels from Dieppe to Saint John for a check-up.

“I have nothing but praise for the professional service and the way I’m treated at the Saint John Regional Hospital,” Jean said.

Your support will help purchase high-resolution Intracardiac Echocardiography (ICE) imaging equipment for the NB Heart Centre’s electrophysiology and interventional cardiology programs, keeping our doctors and clinical staff on the cutting edge of advances in medicine so they can focus on what matters most: patients.
